Seventy years of construction management research (1954–2026): a global scientometric and bibliometric review of trends, gaps and future directions

Based on an analysis of 9,748 publications from 1954 to 2026, this study reveals a sharp growth in construction management research after 2010, driven by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain and virtual reality. Six key research themes now define the field, ranging from workforce development and safety to sustainability and advanced materials, highlighting the integration of engineering, environmental and social dimensions. While global leadership is dominated by the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China and Australia, the field is becoming more collaborative and inclusive. Despite these advances, important gaps remain in digital integration, sustainability assessment and interdisciplinary research, offering strong opportunities for future scholars and PhD researchers to contribute to the next phase of construction management innovation.
