Apa tu managing consulting? Definisi dia adalah ‘an organisation that provides advice to those in charge of running a business‘.
Industry ni dimulakan oleh Arthur D Little yangmana membuka management consultancy yang pertama sekali didunia ni pada tahun 1886 dulu. Kemudian pada tahun 1914, Booz Allen Hamilton buka satu company consulting yang serve both industry and government.
Kemudian lahir lah McKinsey pada tahun 1926 dan pada World War 2 that happened in 1930s, keperluan utk logistics planning and management semakin meningkat yangmana memerlukan pengurusan dalam bidang finance, strategy dan organisation advice dan menggalakkan lagi permintaan utk industry ni berkembang. 20 tahun kemudian yakni in 1950s, industry ni expanded overseas dan pada tahun 1963, Boston Consulting Group pun lahir. Kemudian pada tahun 60/70-an McKinsey, BCG, Booz dan Harvard Business School (HBS buat research collaborated dengan industry dan start journal publishing ttg results) define modern strategic management. Industry ni terus berkembang dengan tertubuhnya 5 firms dengan sejumlah 1000 orng consultants didunia pada 80. Pada tahun 1983, Monitor Group ditubuhkan consisting of 6 orang professors dari HBS. Pada akhir 1980s, PwC, KPMG, Ernst and Young, dan Deloitte (& Arthur Anderson) berkembang lebih pesat dan pada tahun 1990, lebih 30 firms dah tertubuh dan semakin berkembang driven by strategy dan IT advice.
Dulu, ada 3 jenis services yang dioffer: strategy, operations dan technology tapi skang ni kena tambah satu lagi yakni outsourcing. Satu consulting company boleh ada satu atau lebih dari jenis2 yang berikut:
Type M:Pure management consulting only
Such as strategy, human resources, change management, programme management, financial management, operations, business process re-engineering, economic and environmental consulting, marketing and corporate communications, and outsourcing advice, but nit IT consulting
Type A: Management consulting, accounting, tax and corporate advisory
The leaders here are the ‘Big Four’:Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PwC. SOme second tier accountign firms also offer management consulting services
Type I:Management and IT consulting
Provide both pure management and IT consulting;some also carry out systems development work (primarily programming)
Type E:Management and engineering consulting
Share a common heritage in civil engineering and project management. most are relatively new entrants to the managemnet consulting market
Type O: Management consulting and outsourcing
Offer a combination of general management consulting services plus outsourcing/managed services
Type C: Combined management consulting, IT systems development and outsourcing/managed services
The very biggest players in the consulting indusrty (Accenture and IBM) offer a full range of services from consulting through to delivering a managed service. Some firms, such as TATA and Infosys have entered the consulting market as a result of their outsourcing services, others, such as Accenture, have moved in the opposite direction, developing outsourcing services to complement their existing consulting practice.
